FINAL GAME

In module two we were asked to design a game that has a learning outcome. Actually we do not have a name for it yet but we thought about an educational game that’s about  living a day through the experience of someone with a mental illness . It will be in the form of a board game . Each player will draw a card from a deck with a certain mental illness. Then he will have to act out through different stages of the day which will be similar to a normal person’s day to day life. For example how will he act in traffic, or if he is confronted by his boss in his job etc.

Each turn the player will be given hints about the illness to help him understand it more, so they are able to imitate the actions of someone who has those issues. Other players will try to guess the illness, and will both them and the player will be given points if they guess it correctly. The earlier the correct guess the higher the points both players gain (the player acting , and the player who guess correctly). If a player has a guess he will write it down on a piece of paper with the turn and keep it a separate place. Each player can guess another player’s illness once per turn.

The goal of this game is to raise awareness of how much people with mental illness suffer in their day to day lives.

  1. I like the idea – I’m curious how the events will happen to the players as they advance, and whether each player gets a different situation to react to, or if all the players react to the same situation. Also, how will the player know about characteristics of the mentally ill person for that particular illness? Is it in the original card they get, or do they get hints throughout (and how do they get those hints without the other players getting a clue?). Can players search the internet during the game to get more hints? Or can they “ask a psychologist” or such?

    • The game is not only about guessing which mental illness is this, it is about that each player tries to relive the mental illness experience through what he has read from the small hints he had read on the card (which the majority of the people know). Thus, it is a journey not only for guess who is who, but for discovering and digging deeper into the daily struggle that a mental ill person suffers from and if they failed to know how to react towards one of the situations or they are just clueless; they can pick one card from the pile of cards called guess what and actually we chose the name of the game we decided it to be “GUESS WHAT”
We are still thinking about many details and we’re going to ask counseling and psychology professor and I think someone is going to ask a psychology doctor outside the campus

  2. It’s a great idea how you get points for both guessing and doing the acting so it is more of a partnership than a competition when playing. What support will the ‘actors’ get to prepare to play their role well?

    • Each one of the actors will have a pile of cards that includes the name of the mental illness and hints about the mental illness as well. There is about 8 events which are (Home/work/school/friends/family/car and travel) each event includes about 8 situations. The actors should begin from the starting point which is the HOME they have to take one of the situations in this event and read it out loud then each one of them will act out what he/she’ll do towards this situation. I hope you get the idea. Thank you so much for your opinion it’s really supportive. you can check my blog post on May 17 as well as I’ll post a picture of our game and I’ll explain everything, I’ll post a video as well
